False alarm actually.

The phone dude who is getting it for me didn't understand the email he was sent so it is prob more likely to come in early next week.

He's ordered it for me from BlueFly mobile who are about the least reputable phone store in the universe. Just look at their thread on whirlpool...

Not happy but nothing i can do really till it arrives.

Passing the time looking for accessories etc.

As soon as it comes i'll put up some thoughts comparing it to my wife's iPhone

Least you don't need to root it to put 2.2 on.

I know.

I'll probably wait for the OTA update anyway as it seems the Froyo build out there is only a release client and the official final version is coming in the next week or two.

Hopefully i have my phone by then...

EDIT: Awesome news - i got a call this afternoon to let me know that my phone had arrived at the phone broker and that i can pick it up tomorrow morning!!!

SWEET!!!!! In 4 days it would have been a month since i originally said to order the stupid thing... Damn grey importing is soooo slow :(

Well I've had the phone for a couple of days now and it's pretty friggin awesome.

I'm yet to root it (don't even know if i will) but Android 2.1 is working a charm.

I'm loving the speed of the thing - compared to my missus' iPhone 3G (not 3GS) it's yards and yards ahead.

The browser is good, and multitaksing seems to work as advertised. It's not exactly full multitasking but still well worthwhile.

The widgets are great and there's heaps of apps to download to add more.

Availability of emulators is fantastic. I'll definitely be getting me some roms ASAP.

Problems so far are the usual suspects:

Battery life is lame. Admittedly i've been hammering the thing all the time but it's definitely never going to last a day with my current usage. As i get over the new phone period i'm sure it will suffice.

Reception is patchy. I am used to telstra's awesome reception so i knew i was in for a bit of a drop in this area, but it's just annoying that 3g reception varies so wildly all the time...

Apps so far are not at the same level as some iphone ones, though i'm sure that the rapid rate of uptake to the android platform will see this change in the short term.

Apart from those issues i'm stoked and am looking forward to playing with it some more next week or the week after when Froyo comes out properly

What carrier are you with now?

Had a play with the trainee's HTC Desire (Telstra) this morning for a few hours. I haven't tried a non-Sense UI but i really like it, so would prolly get a HTC because i like what it adds.

Pretty cool little phone. Battery life does seem a bit weak for the size of the battery though (its huge).

Still gonna wait and see what the new iPhone 4g is like.

Yeah there's no point making the jump now until you see what apple brings in the next week or so...

Desire is awesome too - i had a play as well - sense looks nice but i didn't really get much of a chance to see how it differentiates itself more than just visually...

Oh well, iPhone 4. New design and uber screen are the biggest changes, the rest is pretty standard stuff on par with the current Android offerings. Have to decide whether it's worth going for or turf the iPhone paraphernalia and paid apps and choose a rival offering.

Yeah. I like the design of the new iPhone, but hate being restricted by Apple and having to use iTunes. The battery life seems much better on the iPhone 4, but Android is way cool.

It will probably all come down to how much i have to pay per month ($104/m atm for two iPhone 3G's). We'll find out in a month and a bit.

Just put snes, nes, game boy and genesis emulators on my nexus - all work perfectly as described - and the games are tiny - i've got about 700 or so on the phone at the moment. Ridiculous that they have these apps on the official android marketplace - i would have thought nintendo and sega would have cracked it big time...

Not really useful for anything that involves too many buttons but mario works perfectly...

You will find the emulators are legal, but the games aren't.

So you can have any emulator you want, just can't use any of the games legally :)

After reading all the guff, I think I will stay with the iPhone, the only factor to wait on is price.

Looks sexy, and slightly smaller too ;)

Well I bought one outright from the apple store on George street at about 830, went home and butchered my sim card with a pair of scissors to micro size, works just fine. I've got no antennagate issues, I lose 2 bars if I try hard. The free case program hasn't rolled out here yet so mine is naked, I've got a zagg invisible shield on order from the US but.

Camera seems pretty fab from my few cat photos and movies made so far. It is nice and sleek, heavier than I exected though

Ordered ours this morning. $0 on the $59 cap ($550 calls, 2gb data, unlimited sms, unlimited calls to optus mobiles, tethering). Get first 3 months free (2 for ordering online, 1 for it being on backorder). According to net/whirlpool, Optus is the only carrier handing out bumpers with em. Got $300 ETF for Jam's phone waived.

Score. PDT_Armataz_02_44

Lined up this morning and got one :D. 32GB came with the free case. Without the case though I have no antennagate issues tried all morning to try find the spot that kills it, but found nothing.

Very happy with it, speed compared to my old 3G is insane, Screen looks very sexy, and as landers said the camera is very cool. Havent tested FaceTime as yet.

Here's a couple of low light hot pussy close-up shots:
